New vaccination requirements set for students  The St. Clair County Health Department will have a clinic on Saturday, Aug. 28 that will allow parents to get their students and other family members up-to-date with new vaccination requirements before school starts. The health department office is at 3415 28th St., Port Huron. The clinic is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Medicaid and most insurances will be accepted. Sliding fees are offered for uninsured or under-insured children, and special programs are available for qualifying adults. The H1N1 flu vaccine also is now available at no charge.
New vaccination requirements: - All children entering kindergarten, all 6th grade students, and all children changing school districts will need two doses of Varicella vaccine or a history of chicken pox disease.
- All children 11-18 years of age who are changing school districts or are enrolled in the 6th grade will need one dose of Meningococcal (MCV4 or MPSV4) vaccine and one dose of tetanus/diphtheria/ acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.

Grants help make college accessible to more studentsTwo grants awarded locally will give St. Clair County students and parents more resources in preparing for college. The RESA received a $50,000 grant from the Michigan College Access Network that will help support student access to and success in college, while Cargill Salt Inc. gave the Community Foundation of St. Clair County three gifts totaling more than $50,000. The Cargill money will support several programs, including the county’s College Access initiative.

Trail booklets make hikes more informative The nature center now offers a self-guided trail booklet that will allow visitors to identify and learn about various flowers, birds, trees and shrubs as they tour the 90-acre property. Education Technology team earns another Telly AwardRESA received two Telly Awards for excellence in video production for its Education Technology Office produced documentary, Port Huron’s Pioneers of Medicine. Silver and bronze statues were given in the categories of documentary and editing. The Telly Awards honors outstanding local, regional and cable TV programs, as well as video and film productions. This is the second year in a row an Education Technology production has earned a Telly Award.
H1N1 clinics offered at health departmentThe St. Clair County Health Department is offering walk-in vaccination clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The clinics are available at no cost to the public, and no appointment is necessary. Get clinic hours and more information by going to the health department's website.
Homeless DVDs available statewideRESA-created DVDs* exploring the plight of homeless students are available to order. The DVDs give a first-hand look at the cause of homelessness and how educators can respond. * Videos are also available upon request. Click here for DVD order form
